2020 ASYMÉTRIES
ASYMÉTRIES, est celle d’une traversée qui a débutée à Rome, lors d’une résidence de recherche-création, pour se poursuivre depuis dans l’atelier. À l’image d’une lente excavation, je me suis attardée à certaines sources de notre histoire commune, matérielle et visuelle, en lien avec notre façon d’habiter l’espace. Des archétypes ont surgi d’autres sont revenus.
Ce nouveau corpus s’articule autour de la figure du labyrinthe (origine de la cité, mémoire) et de la grille (schème moderne spatio-temporel). Ces modèles sont à la fois le cadre et le fond sur lesquels l’histoire s’écrit. D’un monde contenu, prévisible, cyclique (labyrinthe), on se retrouve avec l’avenue de la modernité à imaginer un monde hors de nous, étendu, sans limites (grille). En opposition avec la pensée dominante, on se heurte à notre propre finitude.
ASYMÉTRIES regroupe un ensemble d’œuvres aux formes et aux dimensions variées qui sont issus de la manipulation d’une toile de jute épaissie par l’application successive et répétée d’une base colorée de blanc de Meudon et d’acrylique. Ce procédé révèle la nature intime de la toile comme tissage, ses imperfections et ses relâchements, pour l’opposer à une intervention rigide soit dessinée ou découpée. L’une cherchant à dissoudre l’autre ou au contraire à la contenir.+
ASYMÉTRIES is an exhibition presenting a course of work that started in Rome during a research-creation residency, and continued in the studio here in Montreal. My process was a kind of slow excavation, looking at some sources of our common material and visual history and their relation to how we inhabit space. Certain archetypes emerged from this observation: the labyrinth (origin of the city) and the grid (modern spatio-temporal scheme). The new works were developed around these concepts. From a contained, cyclical, predictable world (labyrinth), we find ourselves, with modernity’s arrival, imagining a world outside of us, extended, without limits (the grid).
ASYMÉTRIES gathers a group of works of varied shapes and dimensions, all made from burlap that was thickened with multiple and repeated applications of colored white of Meudon and acrylic. This process reveals the cloth’s weaving pattern, it’s imperfections and “loosenings”, which cohabit with a rigid intervention on my part, whether a drawing or a cut. This combination of a soft and uncontrolled element with a strict and contained gesture dissolves both qualities into one another. - Marie-Claire Blais
